I stare across the churning sea
Rippling crimson in the sunset's blaze
And I dream I spot land in that twilight glaze
Though I know it's not but a distant squall I see
Water to starboard, water to lee
No harbor, no land for hours upon days
I stare across the churning sea
Rippling crimson in the sunset's blaze
There's lament at the heart of every sailor's glee
As the deck pitches and the ship dips and sways
For there's nary a joy in all our lonely ways
But for the wind in the sails and friends of dubious degree
I stare across the churning sea
