cardinal Joseph Bernadin
ascended to the Lord today
ravaged by metastization
dead at the age of 68
irony abounds in this somber time
now this quiet, gentle soul
a private man for all his public figurehood
lies in state attended by the glare of television lights

by demonstrating grace in dying
every moment became a broadcast vigil
run every day at six and ten
newshounds craving the barest change
always keeping the tape rolling
death passing before our eyes on the evening news
in macabre daily updates
now it's all over but the media coverage
